Dr Angela Attwood and colleagues from Bristol's School of Experimental Psychology recruited 160 social drinkers aged 18-40 with no history of alcoholism to attend two experimental sessions. At one session they were asked to drink either lager or a non-alcoholic soft drink from either a straight-sided glass or a curved 'beer flute'.

The participants were almost twice as slow when drinking alcohol from the straight-sided glass compared to the curved glass. There was no difference in drinking rates from the glasses when the drink was non-alcoholic.

The researchers suggest that the reason for this may be because it is more difficult to accurately judge the halfway point of shaped glasses. As a result, drinkers are less able to gauge how much they have consumed.

In order to test this, participants attended another session in which they completed a computer task that presented numerous pictures of the two glasses containing varying volumes of liquid. By asking participants to judge whether the glass was more or less than half full, the researchers were able to show that there was greater error in accurately judging the halfway point of the curved glass.

Importantly, the degree of this error seemed to be associated with the speed of drinking. That is, the participants who tended to show the greatest error in their halfway judgments tended to show the greatest changes in drinking rate.

The speed at which an alcoholic beverage is drunk will influence the level of intoxication experienced, and also the number of drinks consumed in a single drinking session. Therefore, slowing drinking rates is likely to have positive impact for the individual and also at a population level.

Dr Attwood said: "Due to the personal and societal harms associated with heavy bouts of drinking, there has been a lot of recent interest in alcohol control strategies. While many people drink alcohol responsibly, it is not difficult to have 'one too many' and become intoxicated. Because of the negative effects alcohol has on decision making and control of behaviour, this opens us up to a number of risks.

"People often talk of 'pacing themselves' when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, and I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses."

RIM details BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10: IT guys get a single web console for their various tools

We already knew that RIM was readying a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server to ship alongside the first BB10 devices in early 2013. Today, the company detailed the package, formally known as BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. The big story here is that already-existing IT tools like BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service will be accessible from a single web console. The company also clarified that BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can run off separate servers, or just one. Take note, though, that the older BES 5+ will still need its own server for the time being. As we previously reported, too, the newest version of BES will offer legacy support to older devices -- specifically, it can support PlayBook tablets, phones running BlackBerry 7 OS or higher as well as iOS and Android devices.

Team Turnarounds - Small Business Trends

Team TurnaroundsAre you finding yourself part of a failing team and wondering ?Now what??? You?ll want to check out Team Turnarounds: A Playbook for Transforming Underperforming Teams by Joe Frontiera (@JoeFrontiera) and Daniel Leidl.

This is a great book to read over the next few weeks or months with the fall sports season approaching.? But Team Turnaounds doesn?t just use team sports as examples, they also have quite a few business examples, as well.

After all, a business is nothing more than a group of people working together ? as a team.

In Team Turnarounds the authors discuss the key parallels between business and sports.? One parallel, for example, is that each requires a committed leader; someone who is willing to stand up and tell the truth to the larger organization.? This message often takes the form of something like this, ?You?re really not that good? and then ?We can be better.?

The Authors Bring Sports Psychology to the World of Business

Joe Frontiera and Daniel Leidl co-manage Meno Consulting, a firm that focuses on culture turnaround, team development and leadership development.? Both hold PhDs in sports psychology from West Virginia University, where they serve as adjunct professors in the Leadership Studies program.

You can also read their articles ?On Leadership? in The Washington Post.

It?s no surprise that the authors? experience in sports psychology resonates with business leaders.? Both sports and business are judged on performance.? And Team Turnarounds explores how business and sports leaders motivate their teams toward a common goal.

Put the 6 Steps to Success to Work for Your Team

In their many interviews with business and sports leaders, Frontiera and Leidl uncovered six key steps that teams have to take to go from worst to first:

  1. Leading past losing: Take a good hard look at where you are and tell the truth about it.
  2. Committing to growth: After you accept reality, you have to see past it and commit to a new future.
  3. Changing behaviors: This stage transforms planning and talking into actually doing and taking actions.
  4. Embracing adversity: Domino?s Pizza is featured as an example of a company facing their obstacles head on using them to drive their success.
  5. Achieving success: Once your team starts winning, the next step is to focus on what?s next.? So your winning isn?t really the end ? it?s the beginning.
  6. Nurturing a culture of excellence: This final stage features an interview with Dan Rooney from the Steelers and what it takes to protect and maintain a dynasty.? Just for fun, you can also think about where Penn State went wrong in this stage when they decimated a brand and dynasty that it took decades to build.

Arguably, the most powerful chapter of the book is Chapter 7, where the authors offer a very thorough workbook or playbook that you can use with your team to create your own turnaround.

Why Team Turnarounds?Appeals to a Sports Dummy

Team Turnarounds really spoke to me and I?m a self-proclaimed sports dummy.? I only follow two football teams; my hometown Steelers and Penn State (well, at least until all that mess happened, now I need distance).? But in both of these circumstances, I can say that I?ve watched these teams play not because of the sport, per se, but because of all the things that Frontiera and Leidl talk about in Team Turnarounds.

This book appealed to me because it drilled down into those subtle aspects of any organizations? success and it gave me a toolkit that I can use to engage and enroll all the teams that I?m a part of.

I also think this book is ideal for those business owners (like me) who are an integral part of virtual teams where you take the lead sometimes and then you follow other times.? I found the insight and advice in this book invaluable in helping me motivate and manage the teams I participate in.

You Don?t Need to be Failing to Take on Team Turnarounds

I?d recommend Team Turnarounds as a business book that you read for yourself and share with your associates and team members.? This isn?t a book for failing organizations, it?s a book for any organization that requires the contribution of more than one person.

It?s often said that none of us reaches success on our own; success comes on the heels of those who came before us and those who work with us.? Team Turnarounds is certainly the playbook you?ll want to use to win the game of business.

Paint Layer On A Wall

Paint layer is usually the final touch to a newly-constructed home. Seldom is a house left without finishing off with paint. Paint is also important when it comes to renovations. A layer of paint can make a very old, tired house look spanking new. Estate agents are notorious for their use of paint to push the price of property up. As a result, many buyers are duly advised to seek the services of professional assessors before they sign on the dotted line. A layer of paint is a very important part of the house and its walls. To make the painting of your home long lasting, a layer of paint is very crucial. It act as a cover of the whole painting.
Both oil-based and water-based paints are very common in the home market, but more clients commonly use water-based paints. These paints are cheap and cheap to maintain, more especially during the painting job itself. They are healthier for the workers, as they dont have to remove excess paint from their bodies using chemicals. If it is a water-based paint, warm water with a bit of soap is all that is needed for the painter to clean himself. The tools and the consumables are cheaper too.
With regard to which paint to use and which tools to use, a lot depend on the surface of the wall being painted. The easiest to paint is a very smooth wall. It is faster and easier to paint and the tools are straightforward. As to which tools to use, a lot depends on the wall itself. A smooth wall needs only a roller, which is effective in terms of productivity and efficiency. A smooth wall is also tricky when it comes to the thickness of the paint and the type. Too thick a layer of paint may lead to it peeling away later. The professional painting advice is a thin water-based layer of paint is usually make positive effect in these situations.
A wall with a rough surface is more difficult to paint. The roller has to be slowed down and sometimes it becomes necessary to do two passes or more on the surface, just to fill the small cracks and crevices. If the wall has an uneven surface as a result of decorations that are built into the wall, then the paint-brush is needed. Unfortunately, this will slow the progress tremendously since it requires careful strokes; and it always covers a smaller area.
The most common and popular approach to painting of walls is whitewashing with water-based paints. It is cheap and effective. Also it is popular among most of the painters. White reflects light and is therefore good at creating ambience. It also interacts well with the weather elements such as rain and the sun. Colours fade in the sun, but white does not. It may become more dull and creamy-coloured with time, but it does not lose its character. Besides, another layer of water-based white-washing is all that is needed.

Irtiqa: Friday Journal Club: "Science, Religion, and Society"

by Salman Hameed

For our Friday Journal Club, here is a recent paper by biologist Jerry Coyne: Science Religion, and Society: The Problem of Evolution in America, published in the journal Evolution.

Summary:?
The paper looks at the reasons why a majority of Americans reject biological evolution. Coyne attributes the central reason reason to the "extreme religiosity of the United States". I think the Abstract does a pretty good job of laying out the basic position of the paper:

American resistance to accepting evolution is uniquely high among First World countries. This is due largely to the extreme religiosity of the United States, which is much higher than that of comparably advanced nations, and to the resistance of many religious people to the facts and supposed implications of evolution. The prevalence of religious belief in the United States suggests that outreach by scientists alone will not have a huge effect in increasing the acceptance of evolution, nor will the strategy of trying to convince the faithful that evolution is compatible with their religion. Because creationism is a symptom of religion, another strategy to promote evolution involves loosening the grip of faith on America. This is easier said than done, for recent sociological surveys show that religion is highly correlated with the dysfunctionality of a society, and various measures of societal health show that the United States is one of the most socially dysfunctional First World countries. Widespread acceptance of evolution in America, then, may have to await profound social change.
I have to say that I expected more from this paper. I think the topic is really interesting and it is, of course, worth exploring the reasons why a majority of the population in the world's most advanced nation reject evolution. The paper, instead, turns into a polemic against religion and is often sloppy with definitions. Even if religiosity (or religion) is the main correlation with the rejection of evolution, one has to look into the reasons why evolution became a controversial topic for American religions. Just saying "religion is the cause" is too simplistic and too broad. For example (from the Pew Survey), within the US, 81% of Buddhists, 80% of Hindus and 77% of Jews agree with the statement that "evolution is the best explanation of human life on Earth" (in case, you are wondering 45% of US Muslims also agree with this statement). So one has to be careful in using the term "religion" or "religiosity" for the causation.

Now it is true that much of the US resistance to evolution comes from Evangelical Christians. But that opposition has a particular context rooted in the politics and culture of early 20th century US. For example, it became part of the Evangelical opposition as a reaction to the spread of public education, as well as a legitimate complaint of having Social Darwinism (which is not biological evolution, but its application to society) and Eugenics as part of biology textbooks (plus, Eugenics-based compulsory sterilization was part of 30 US states in the early 20th century). This is not to excuse the poor reception of evolution in the 21st century, but to provide some context of why most Evangelical groups ended up rejecting evolution. I find it a bit odd that a paper focusing on the reasons for the rejection of evolution in the US does not mention - even in a cursory manner - any historical or cultural context.

Much of the remaining paper focus on showing the incompatibility of science and religion, and then arguing that the only reasonable solution to increasing the acceptance of evolution is by reducing religion in the US:

After having taught evolution for years, we have finally recognized where our real opposition lies: creationism is simply one of many symptoms of religion. A continuous stream of anti-evolution propaganda pours from the religiously motivated, distorting the public understanding of evolution. It follows that naturalistic evolution will not attract a majority of Americans until our nation becomes less religious. That, of course, is contrary to accommodationism, which takes religion as a given.
Okay - now these are huge topics to cover - bit couple of quick points. Coyne argues that "religion breeds resistance not only to evolution, but also to science itself (emphasis in the original paper). Well - it depends on what science and what religion. I know that Coyne is critiquing Gould's Non-Overlapping Magisteria (NOMA)?- and indeed there are some valid critiques out there - but a blanket statement regarding religion and science is equally problematic. Most religions (and most religious beliefs) do not have much to say about most sciences. It is only a small sub-set of sciences - usually dealing with the questions of origins - where there is explicit interaction with some (or most) religions. But then we have to address the myriads of ways individuals address these questions of origins and interpret those within their own religious traditions. Wait a minute - but then this becomes a complicated mess which cannot be reduced to a simple answer: "religion did it". In fact, the blame for all this messiness goes to the long process of evolution that led to these complex bipedal species that defy simple explanations.

Towards the end of the paper, Coyne looks at socio-economic factors that may explain the high religiosity of America, which for him, explains the high rates of rejection of evolution. Josh Rosenau on his Thoughts from Kansas blog has done a thorough job addressing this part of the paper, so I will let him deal with this:

Coyne?s causal model holds that income inequality (and economic insecurity in general) -> religiosity -> creationism. To back this causal model, he works from aggregate levels of support for evolution in 34 industrialized nations, correlating those with national measures of religiosity, then correlates national religiosity with national income inequality. As we know, correlation is not causation, and this pattern of correlations could imply many other causal pathways: e.g., religiosity -> creationism -> income inequality or income inequality -> creationism -> religiosity.?
Certainly, the inequality -> religion -> creationism causal chain has an intuitive logic, but there?s an intuitive logic to other causal chains of these three items. Correlation alone doesn?t let us decide what order makes the most sense for a causal chain. For instance, Coyne and other gnu atheists have long sought to attribute all manner of social ills to the persistence of religion, so might high levels of religiosity cause both social inequality and creationism? Or might income inequality create little incentive to learn science, and then low science literacy leaves the population without a viable alternative to religious explanations? There are, naturally, ways to statistically test these different causal chains, but this would require Coyne to have tested his model by seeking to falsify alternative explanations, or even in considering potential confounding factors, and he shows no interest in rigorously testing his model.?
As with all such correlational studies, it?s also possible that the three variables at issue are connected by some fourth factor not present in Coyne?s model. The most obvious factor which Coyne ignores is education. Studies consistently show that, even after controlling for religiosity, how educated someone is has a tremendous impact on his or her views on evolution. Countries with better educational systems also tend to be more accepting of evolution, and countries with high income inequality tend to have worse education systems. The correlations Coyne uses to justify his causal model may, then, be spurious. Oddly, his paper never even mentions differences between national educational systems in discussing different nation?s attitudes towards science. Nor does the paper discuss differences in economic and social development, as measured by GDP or GNI or broader measures like the Human Development Index (which includes economic factors, life expectancy, educational statistics, and other factors to generate a more comprehensive picture of a nation?s development).?
This omission is surprising because controlling for GNI per capita is common in such international comparisons. Lots of things correlate with economic development, and factoring that out of a comparison is usually an important first step. Indeed, among the 34 countries Coyne examines, income inequality has a strong negative correlation with GNI per capita, and the median years of schooling among adults has a strong positive correlation with GNI per capita. Many measures of religiosity also correlate with GNI per capita and income inequality. These correlations make causality especially tricky to ascertain, though he could have controlled for them if he wanted to.?

You should read his full post here.

One final thought on the paper. I think it is important to understand the impact of religion on evolution acceptance, ?debates over stem cells, issues related to the beginning and the end of life, etc. However, we need to do it in a way that takes into account the complex ways people interact with their beliefs. Plus, we need to appreciate the interplay of religion with culture and politics - and devise ways to distinguish them for a study on evolution acceptance.

Fitness Friday? How to Eat Your Way to Olympic Gold ? Elaine ...

?

with Elaine Hastings, RD

Carving turns, shredding pipe, grabbing air?and winning gold?with help from dietitian Adam Korzun

While most of the world will be glued for the next two weeks to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London (the opening ceremony will be televised tomorrow night), Adam Korzun is already thinking about the Winter Olympic Games?still more than two years away.

The sports dietitian for the?United States Ski and Snowboard Association?(USSA), Korzun (SAR?05) made sure nutrition wasn?t a barrier for US skiers and snowboarders competing in the 2010 Olympic Games, where Team USA won 37 medals?the largest medal haul for any nation in Winter Olympics history. With those Vancouver victories behind them, Korzun is now focused on developing nutrition plans for the USSA athletes who will compete in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

Korzun?s philosophy is simple: ?Nutrition is not going to win you a gold medal, but it can definitely keep you from getting one.?

Breaking Training Records

Fueling Olympic athletes has been Korzun?s job since 2007, when he joined with the US Olympic Committee (USOC) as a sport dietitian. A culinary-school graduate with experience at Boston?s Four Seasons Hotel, Korzun completed Sargent College?s Master of Science in Nutrition program and was working in Boston-area hospitals when Joan Salge-Blake (SAR?84), a Sargent College clinical associate professor of health sciences, sent out an email advertising a position at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. With his previous experience as a chef, his dietetic credentials, and his Sargent training in exercise physiology, Korzun was a perfect fit for the role.

In Colorado, he helped prepare weight lifters, kayakers, wrestlers, and pentathletes to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics. When the USOC shifted its focus to winter sports, Korzun began spending considerable time in Park City, Utah, consulting with the men?s alpine ski team. He assisted the trainers there with a yearlong study: ?We were checking and monitoring blood glucose levels, hydration, hematocrit, hemoglobin, etc., when the athletes were cooking on their own, when they were eating a meal plan, and when they were using private catering.? For the final phase of the study, Korzun traveled with the alpine team to a training camp in New Zealand where he planned and prepared all their meals himself. ?It was the highest training level they?d ever achieved at camp. All of the blood parameters were perfect,? he says. Convinced of the benefits of concentrating on nutrition, USSA?s high performance director invited Korzun to help strategize for the 2010 Vancouver games.

Korzun attributes part of the team?s success in Vancouver to a decision to house athletes outside the official Olympic Village. During the games, US skiers and snowboarders stayed in condominiums, where all their meals were prepared by private chefs, according to Korzun?s nutritional guidelines. The controlled environment minimized exposure to the Olympic Village?s international supply of germs, discouraged partying, encouraged team bonding, and?most important for Korzun?ensured that athletes were properly fueled for their competitions.
During the games, Korzun accepted a full-time position with USSA, making it the only US national governing body with a dedicated dietitian on staff. Korzun now works at USSA?s five-acre Center of Excellence in Park City with a team of strength and conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other specialists, all charged with developing and maintaining the health and performance of 146 World Cup?level athletes.

Optimal Fueling

As he develops his nutrition plans, Korzun must keep in mind the specific demands of each USSA sport. Giant slalom and mogul competitors, for example, ski multiple runs in quick succession. Mogul skiers may only be on the hill for 20 seconds, ?but they?ve got a second run coming up,? Korzun says, ?so how do we optimize fueling between those runs?? Cross-country skiers have similar needs to those of runners, ?but then you have to factor in the cold component, so you?re looking at the electrolyte balance from the fluid changes that occur at negative 20 degrees in cloudy Norway.? The trickiest sport from Korzun?s perspective is Nordic combined, which pairs ski jumping with a 10-kilometer cross-country ski race. ?Their coaches push them to be as light as possible for the jump, but they still need to be strong and fast enough to ski,? he says.

Korzun?s plans also factor in athletes? individual needs: ?At this level, it?s all personal.? One nutrient added at a certain time before a certain race, he says, can make a world of difference. Creating individualized nutrition plans begins in the spring and summer?months before the season?s first snowfall?with exercise and physiological testing. Strength and conditioning coaches use the test results to develop an athlete?s training regimens, while Korzun uses them to fine-tune the athlete?s diet. A lactate threshold test (which indicates at what heart rate an athlete?s body switches from aerobic to anaerobic energy production), for example, helps the coach determine the athletes? training zones and allows Korzun to provide proper fuel sources. ?When I?ve got a cross-country skier going out for an interval session,? Korzun explains, ?and we know his heart rate is going to be in the 180s, we can look back at his lactate threshold data and see that he crosses the threshold at 160. That tells me this activity is going to be all anaerobic, which is all carbohydrate dominant; therefore, we need to work on a bit more carbohydrate recovery or carbohydrate timing for that particular session.?

Pancakes for Dinner

Once the summer testing is done, Korzun spends most of the rest of the year?up to 200 days of it?traveling to training camps and competitions. While he fills his luggage with protein bars and ergogenic supplement powders, Korzun relies on real food as much as possible. ?Food is just so much more delicious,? he says?and it can provide valuable mood boosts. ?When you spend four months in Europe, you don?t get Mexican food, so if I bring someone a quesadilla in the middle of Austria, I?m a superhero.?

Another treat the athletes love: breakfast for dinner. ?I?m all for cooking bacon,? Korzun says. ?You won?t hear many nutritionists say that, but it all has its place.? Skiers and snowboarders who get up at 6 a.m. for training and competition never start a day with pancakes and eggs, but Korzun occasionally prepares these morning favorites for evening meals. ?I do it at the end of a big block?maybe after a third straight day of intense, high-volume training,? he says. ?I?m filling them full of carbohydrates with the pancakes or the French toast, they?re getting good sodium from the bacon, and they?re going to be drinking a good amount of fluid.?

Korzun?s unpredictable travel schedule and the gold-medal stakes make for a stressful job, but he says the athletes? appreciation makes the sacrifices worthwhile. Five-time Olympic medalist Bode Miller ?has all the money in the world to go out and do whatever he wants,? says Korzun, ?but comes to every meal because of how it fuels him.? And if Miller earns yet more gold in Sochi, Korzun will have the satisfaction of knowing he contributed to the triumph.

Nudity, masks and color: Protests for Pussy Riot

The judge said the three band members committed hooliganism driven by religious hatred and offending religious believers. PARIS (AP) ? They asked for undies on heads, masks, and as much color as possible on Friday. They got all that plus a topless activist hacking down a cross in Ukraine, balaclavas on Soviet-era statues of soldiers in Bulgaria, and everywhere signs reading "Free Pussy Riot."

The small, but raucous protests were held in a few dozen cities in support of three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot who were convicted of hooliganism in Moscow. Several dozen people came out in Barcelona, Spain, a couple hundred in Paris, and a handful in Washington.

The three women, who have been in jail for more than five months because of a guerrilla performance denouncing President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral, were each sentenced to two years in prison.

The trial ? on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred ? has attracted worldwide attention as an emblem of Russia's intolerance of dissent, especially under the reign of Putin, who has moved aggressively in recent months against Russia's opposition activists.

But the call for large global protests in support of the defendants on Friday appeared to draw only a few hundred people to many sites, and they seemed unlikely to gain the momentum needed to exert pressure on Russia's government.

Among those protesting in Berlin was Marianne Birthler, a former East German dissident who was later named head of a post-reunification commission that investigated the East German intelligence service.

"I remember the times when we were in opposition ... the signs from other countries were very, very important. So we knew what we are doing is recognized and there are people who are willing to support us and who follow what happens to us. That's the reason we are here now," she said.

Protesters in Paris, at Igor Stravinsky square near the Centre Pompidou modern art museum, listened as an organizer monitored the Moscow proceedings on his phone, then echoed the chants he reported from Russia, calling out "Svoboda! Svoboda!" or "Freedom! Freedom!"

In Ukraine, four feminist activists, one of them topless, used a chainsaw to hack down a wooden cross in Kiev's central square in a show of support.

"A cross is a symbol of the repressive religious prejudice that supports dictatorship. Now people who worship the cross want to jail the innocent," said Anna Gutsol, leader of the group that chopped down the nearly 6-meter-(18-foot-) tall cross put into place during Ukraine's Orange Revolution.

In Barcelona, Spain, more than 50 colorfully-garbed demonstrators sang and danced to Pussy Riot songs as they protested outside the large Sagrada Familia church.

"Russia may be a mixture of Europe and Asia which means it has a unique approach to religion, but we know this is not really a religious issue," said Andrei Viachenko, a 28-year-old Russian doctoral student studying in Spain.

A protest in Washington was more subdued, with 11 people marching in a loose circle in front of the Russian Embassy.

In Sofia, Bulgaria, supporters of Pussy Riot dressed statues on a Soviet-era monument in colorful balaclavas similar to those worn by demonstrators in Moscow.

Protesters from New York to Copenhagen to London also donned the colorful masks ? and some men at the gathering in the British capital even wore dresses in solidarity.

"These three girls are just the tip of the iceberg," said Adam Adamson, a 26-year-old who set up the Facebook page for the London protest. "Many have been arrested because they were opposing Putin."

Celebrities including Paul McCartney, Madonna and Bjork have called for the band members to be freed.

About 150 people demonstrated outside the Russian Embassy in Berlin. One sign showed a photo of German Chancellor Angela Merkel embracing Putin with the message, "He hasn't earned it."

The crowd cheered and blew whistles as a woman on stage, wearing a pink balaclava, shouted her message to Moscow through a megaphone: "The world is watching you and we don't like what we see ? we are all Pussy Riot."

In Serbia, while anti-Putin activists plan protests in Belgrade, a Serbian far-right group has taken Putin's side. The group Nasi has launched an online game targeting the Pussy Riot members, and says on its website that the women should be sent to a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
