Burning Man 2012 Attendance Stays Well Within Cap

RENO, Nev. -- A year after being placed on probation for drawing too many people, the Burning Man music and arts festival attracted crowds well within the maximum cap allowed by federal land managers.

Bureau of Land Management officials say the festival's peak attendance was 52,385 on Friday, down 1.7 percent from a year ago.

The agency established a daily cap of 60,900 for this year's gathering, which ends Monday.

The BLM placed organizers on probation and threatened to pull their license for exceeding the attendance cap at last year's festival.

The offbeat fest drew daily crowds of more than 53,000 to the Black Rock Desert on both Sept. 2 and 3 last year. A daily cap of 50,000 was allowed then under terms of its special recreation permit.

Biden: Romney wants war with Syria, Iran

YORK, Pa. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday that Republican rival Mitt Romney is "ready to go to war in Syria and Iran" while hurting the middle class.

The warning came during a campaign stop in York, Pa., designed to promote President Barack Obama's economic policies among white, working-class voters. The thrust of Biden's pitch has been that America is digging out from the 2008 economic collapse and that Romney would take the country backward. But Biden, a foreign policy heavyweight, also cautioned voters that Romney would adopt policies that favor confrontation over cooperation.

"He said it was a mistake to end the war in Iraq and bring all of our warriors home," Biden said of Romney. "He said it was a mistake to set an end date for our warriors in Afghanistan and bring them home. He implies by the speech that he's ready to go to war in Syria and Iran. "

Biden made the claim about Syria and Iran without offering specifics; his campaign did not immediately respond to a request for details.

Romney has said he would consider military action in Syria if the war-torn country's chemical weapons were at risk of falling into the wrong hands. Obama, who has opposed military action in Syria, has made similar remarks, calling it a "red line" for the U.S. if Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime were to use chemical or biological weapons.

And like Obama, Romney has said the U.S. must keep all options on the table, including a military strike, when dealing with Iran. But Romney has suggested that Obama has been too soft on Iran and ? without offering specifics himself ? said he would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

But Biden's remarks, in an audience of about 1,400 in a high school gymnasium, focused mostly on the economy.

"This is no time to turn back. We have to continue to move forward," he said. "Folks, I am absolutely certain ? there's not a single doubt in my mind ? that we are on the way to rebuilding this country stronger than it was before."

Biden said Romney's policies favor the rich at the expense of the middle class.

"On top of maintaining that tax cut ... they want to add another $250,000-a-year tax cut for everyone making over a million dollars," Biden said. "So you wonder why they're eviscerating the middle class, and this has a giant price tag."

"These are the very policies that put America's greatness in jeopardy in the first place," he added.

He also noted Ryan had not told the complete story when he talked about a General Motors plant that closed in Janesville, Wis., his hometown.

"What he didn't tell you was that plant in Janesville actually closed while President Bush was still president," Biden said before flying to Wisconsin later in the day.

Samsung: Apple trying to limit consumer choice

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Samsung on Saturday accused Apple of resorting to litigation in an effort to limit consumer choice after the iPhone maker said it was seeking to stop the sale of Galaxy S III smartphones in the United States.

Fresh from its $1 billion court victory over Samsung Electronics Co, Apple Inc., in a separate case, asked a federal district court in San Jose, California, on Friday to add four more products to a list of Samsung goods that Apple says infringe its patents.

The new list of 21 products includes Samsung's flagship smartphone Galaxy S III as well as the Galaxy Note, another popular Android phone. If the court finds those devices are infringing Apple's patents and irreparably harming the U.S. company, it could temporarily halt sales in the U.S. market even before the trial begins.

The latest accusation is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation in one of the most lucrative consumer electronics sectors that is unfolding in 10 countries.

The biggest stakes are in the U.S., the world's largest smartphone market in 2011. Last month, a jury in the San Jose court found that Samsung had copied Apple's design innovations and Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion. Samsung has vowed to appeal the verdict, all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

On Saturday, Samsung denounced Apple's attempt to halt sales of the S III, which hit the 10 million global sales mark in July, less than three months after its release.

"Apple continues to resort to litigation over market competition in an effort to limit consumer choice," Samsung said in a statement. "We will continue to take the necessary legal measures to ensure the availability of our innovative products in the United States."

The strong sales of the S III were crucial in driving Samsung's quarterly profit to a record high in the last quarter and helped it stay ahead in the worldwide smartphone market.

In documents filed with San Jose federal district court on Friday, Apple said 21 Samsung smartphones, media players and tablets released after August 2011 were "copycat products."

"Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smartphone and tablet computer products, Samsung has chosen to copy Apple's technology, user interface, and innovative style," Apple said in one document.

The Cupertino, California-based company claimed that Samsung is illegally using its eight patents. One patent is related to the way the device retrieves information in a computer system and another is about gestures on a touchscreen display to unlock a device.

Apple and Samsung are the world's two largest smartphone makers and together they control over half of the global market. They are embroiled in similar legal tussles in Asia, Europe and the United States.

In April 2011, Apple first accused Samsung of illegally copying Apple's design and technology in the smartphones powered by Google Inc.'s Android technology. Samsung countersued, arguing Apple's iPhone and iPad used its wireless technology without permission.

Social media and news sites have been abuzz over an amazing image supposedly showing?Hurricane Isaac. The picture was actually taken by an amateur in Brunei, but that hasn't stopped people from using it to illustrate all kinds of weird things over the years.?

Last week, something almost as cyclical as storms themselves began spreading across social media ? an old, dramatic image of a green-ish cloud hovering above water. Numerous people attributed the picture to Isaac but, as quickly as the picture spread, even making a brief appearance on Britain's Daily Mail,?people began debunking it. This image seems to pop up every time there's a big storm ? but where did it come from??

1. A dream

This storm was used to illustrate a post about a guy's desert island dream. Scroll to the end for Adriana Lima shots.

2. Spiritual wordplay

In 2008, Tom Cottar used the image for a blog post on spirituality and anagrams ? "Did you ever realize that Britney Spears is an anagram for Presbyterian? Or that Pepsi Cola is an anagram for Episcopal?"

A post from 2010 outlined one right-winger's belief that global warming is hokum.

As suspected by eagle-eyed colleague John Herrman, the original photo was apparently taken by a photographer named Richard Seaman, who posted a whole bunch of photos from a trip to Brunei. Reached by email, he confirmed: "Yes, it's my photo."

Seaman issues stern take-down warnings for uncredited and uncompensated use of his work but sadly, it seems that the picture was just too good ??and too divorced from its source ? for the Internet not to use over and over again.
